Section 1: Why bother?

Why should you bother about health and safety at work? There are three good reasons for a start: you have to bother because the law says so (and will penalise you if you don't); it's more costly not bothering; and accidents happen in every type of work environment. Find out the importance of health and safety here and assess the relevance of health and safety in your own organisation.

Section 2: Think legal

‘The law – it's so difficult to get your head round it – all that legal speak.’ Not so. Health and safety law is quite straightforward. We'll tell you here in plain English about 10 key requirements you have to follow. Add the requirements of what is known as the Six-Pack and you've more or less cracked it. You'll be able to apply the key legal requirements to your own work area.

Section 3: Get organised

Management is about organisation. Health and safety management is just the same. Plan, organise, monitor and control. And it all starts with a coherent health and safety policy, which covers aims and objectives, responsibilities, control systems and management arrangements. Add a little health and safety culture and you've got a recipe for successful health and safety management. At the end of this section you'll be able to apply the requirements of your organisation's health and safety policy to your own work area.

Section 4: It's your responsibility

Everyone has responsibilities in health and safety, not just managers. In this section you'll learn about them. Most importantly, you'll find out about the 10 commandments of management responsibilities. Think about them and you won't be far off track. By the end of this section you'll be able to assess how well you are carrying out your health and safety responsibilities.

Section 5: Reduce risks

They key to health and safety is found in this section. It's called risk assessment and it's not as complicated as you think. Put it this way – you do it every day more than once, usually without knowing it. To find out more about risk assessment and to be able to make a risk assessment of your own area of responsibility, read this section.

Section 6: Proactive not reactive

Don't wait for accidents to happen. Prevention is better than cure. Proaction is better than reaction. Here you'll find out about nine principles of prevention, and how to promote prevention as part of your health and safety culture. You'll be able to design a leaflet which helps to promote a health and safety culture in your organisation.

Unit Into Action

Unit Into Action gives you the opportunity to put into practice what you have learned about health and safety. Building on the work you have done in each section you will be ready to develop an action plan and implement it in your workplace.
